The Ice Garden’s weekly update on the NWHL’s 2016 draftees
Week 9’s Top Prospect for a second week in a row, picking up a goal and two assists and helping Clarkson extend their undefeated streak to 10, is Buffalo Beauts prospect Cayley Mercer.
Get the lowdown on Mercer’s play and the rest of the 2016 NWHL Draft prospects in this week’s review:
1. Kelsey Koelzer, D, Princeton — New York Riveters
· This Week: 2GP – 0G – 2A – 2PTS – 8SOG – 2PIM
Koelzer has struggled to find the back of the net this season, but she's been good at setting up plays. Her defensive game has also been strong recently, and she recorded five blocks last weekend alone. Princeton has struggled more than expected this season and if Koelzer could get her numbers up around her 2015-16 stats it would be good news for the Tigers.
· Season To Date: 10GP – 1G – 7A – 8PTS – 46SOG – 14PIM
2. Lee Stecklein, D, Minnesota — Buffalo Beauts
· This Week: 2GP - 0G - 1A - 1PT - 6SOG - 4PIM
Stecklein had a secondary assist on the power play. Her fourth round shootout goal in game one helped the Gophers secure the extra point in WCHA standings.
· Season To Date: 11GP – 0G – 7A – 7PTS – 24SOG – 10PIM
3. Dani Cameranesi, F, Minnesota — Connecticut Whale

Cameranesi’s big game came during the first match of the series against North Dakota, where she scored both goals in regulation including the game-tying goal with 9:29 remaining.
· Season To Date: 14GP – 14G – 10A – 24PTS – 72SOG – 12PIM
4. Ann-Renée Desbiens, G, Wisconsin — Boston Pride
· This Week: No games
Desbiens did not play in either game this past weekend due to upper body injury. Freshman backup Nikki Cece made her first career start with Desbiens out.
· Season To Date: 12GP: 11W-0L-1T; 9GA – 184SV – 193SHOTS – .953SVS% – 6SHO
5. Sydney Daniels, F, Harvard — New York Riveters
· This Week: No games
Daniels did not play in Harvard's loss to UNH last week. Daniels leads Harvard in goals and points. Between her production on the ice and her leadership, the Crimson feel her loss when she is not in the game.
· Season To Date: 5GP – 4G – 0A – 4PTS – 22SOG – 8PIM
6. Cayley Mercer, F, Clarkson— Buffalo Beauts
· This Week: 2GP – 1G – 2A – 3PTS – 11SOG – 2PIM
As Clarkson continues winning, Mercer continues scoring. Mercer leads her team in assists (13) and points (19) and is tied for second with six goals. If Mercer and Clarkson continue to play like they have been they have a solid chance of making another Frozen Four.
· Season To Date: 14GP – 6G – 13A – 19PTS – 84SOG - 10PIM
7. Andie Anastos, F, Boston College — Connecticut Whale
· This Week: 1GP – 0G – 1A – 1PTS – 5SOG - 0PIM
The Eagles continue to be a slightly inconsistent team, and over the weekend they tied a Northeastern team that is rising in the rankings. Anastos is third on the team in both goals (7) and points (13). Anastos is an impressive player overall, but she has been particularly strong on the power play this season - five of her seven goals are PPGs.
· Season To Date: 13GP – 7G – 6A – 15PTS – 35SOG - 8PIM
8. Sarah Nurse, F, Wisconsin— Boston Pride
· This Week: 2GP - 0G - 1A - 1PT - 11SOG - 2PIM
Nurse has only scored two goals in her last five games played, but overall she is still producing points-per-game at the highest rate in her four year career with 1.21. Nurse picked up her lone assist on the power play in game two’s win against the Bulldogs.
· Season To Date: 12GP – 11G – 5A – 16PTS – 57SOG – 8PIM
9. Jenny Ryan, D, Wisconsin— New York Riveters
· This Week: 2GP - 1G - 1A - 2PTS - 8SOG - 0PIM
Ryan had game two’s first goal, and assisted on the game winner against Minnesota-Duluth on the 19th. She is the Badgers top scoring defenseman and is tied for 3rd on the entire team in shot generation.
· Season To Date: 14GP – 4G – 4A – 8PTS – 45SOG – 6PIM
10. Hayley Scamurra, F, Northeastern— Buffalo Beauts
· This Week: 2GP – 1G – 1A – 2PTS – 6SOG – 6PIM
Scamurra continues to be an important player for Northeastern both offensively and defensively. Last week she scored a goal in NU's draw with Vermont and recorded an assist in their tie with BC. She also blocked an impressive five shots in the game against Vermont.
· Season To Date: 16GP – 4G – 9A – 13PTS – 61SOG - 28PIM
11. Mellissa Channell, D, Wisconsin — Connecticut Whale
· This Week: 2GP - 0G - 0A - 0PTS - 2SOG - 2PIM
After going five games without a block, Channell registered one in the team’s win against Minnesota-Duluth. She was a -2 in the loss, and remains a hit or miss point producer with Ryan featuring a bit more offensively.
· Season To Date: 14GP – 1G – 6A – 7PTS – 17SOG – 12PIM
12. Ashleigh Brykaliuk, F, Minnesota-Duluth — Boston Pride
· This Week: 2GP - 1G - 1A - 2PTS - 7SOG - 0PIM
Pointless in only three of 14 games, Brykaliuk has been a model of consistency and is riding a 5 game point scoring streak. She scored the final goal in Minnesota-Duluth’s game one win, and had a primary powerplay assist on the lone goal in their game two loss.
· Season To Date: 14GP - 7G - 10A - 17PTS - 45SOG - 2PIM
13. Sydney McKibbon, F, Wisconsin — New York Riveters
· This Week: 2GP - 0G - 0A - 0PTS - 5SOG - 0PIM
McKibbon has been ice cold lately scoring only two points in her last five games. Pankowski and her line drove the team’s offense in their win, but seeing how the Badgers picked up their first loss, will welcome a spike in McKibbon’s production.
· Season To Date: 12GP – 3G – 10A – 13PTS – 36SOG – 2PIM
14. Emma Woods, F, Quinnipiac — Buffalo Beauts
· This Week: 2GP - 0G - 0A - 0PTS - 5SOG - 2PIM
Woods continues to be offensively inconsistent. She will have a weekend with multiple assists and then go a weekend without scoring a point. She does continue to be a fairly solid player defensively, and her leadership is important on a Quinnipiac team that has been jumping up and down in the rankings.
· Season To Date: 14GP - 3G - 7A - 10PTS - 43SOG - 6PIM
15. Paige Savage, F, Northeastern — Connecticut Whale
· This Week: 2GP - 0G - 0A - 0PTS - 2SOG - 0PIM
Savage had a solid defensive week but continues to struggle on offense - she has not recorded a point in five games. She had a particularly strong defensive game against BC last week, blocking seven shots total in Northeastern's two games.
· Season To Date: 16GP - 3G - 8A - 11PTS - 36SOG - 8PIM
16. Halli Krzyzaniak, D, North Dakota — Boston Pride
· This Week: 2GP - 0G - 0A - 0PTS - 2SOG - 2PIM
With three blocks in each game, Krzyzaniak was a key component in North Dakota tying powerhouse Minnesota in both games. She went pointless over the series, but did score the Fighting Hawks lone shootout goal in game two.
· Season To Date: 14GP - 2G - 5A - 7PTS - 27SOG - 6PIM
17. Amy Menke, F, North Dakota — New York Riveters
· This Week: 2GP - 0G - 1A - 1PT - 3SOG - 0PIM
With only one goal in her last five games, Menke is still creating in the offensive zone as her primary assist came off of a shot and rebound on the power play. She still leads the Fighting Hawks in assists, points, and SOG to name a few categories.
· Season To Date: 14GP - 4G - 9A - 13PTS - 54SOG - 19PIM
18. Maddie Elia, F, Boston University — Buffalo Beauts
· This Week: 2GP - 0G - 3A - 3PTS - 9SOG - 0PIM
Elia picked back up on offense this week, earning three assists in BU's 7-3 win over Merrimack. She has also now gone three games without a penalty, which is impressive for her. Elia is second on the Terriers in assists (8) and points (13) and her skills as a two-way player will be important as BU attempts to rise in the rankings.
· Season To Date: 13GP - 5G - 8A - 13PTS - 58SOG - 24PIM
19. Sydney Rossman, G, Quinnipiac — Connecticut Whale
· This Week: 1GP - 0W-0L-1T; 3GA - 5SV - 8SHOTS - .625SVS% - 0SHO
Rossman played in only half of a game last weekend. After allowing three goals on eight shots, she was pulled in Quinnipiac's game against Cornell and then sat when the Wildcats took on Colgate. Rossman is generally a very strong goalie, so this was likely just a blip for her. Regardless, it was a surprising performance.
· Season To Date: 15GP - 9W-4L-2T; 21GA - 240SV - 261SHOTS - .920SVS% - 5SHO
20. Lara Stalder, F, Minnesota-Duluth — Boston Pride
· This Week: 2GP - 0G - 1A - 1PT - 5SOG - 0PIM
Though she helped the Bulldogs take down Wisconsin in game one with a secondary assist on the game-winning goal, Stalder had her worst game the next day by way of SOG with only 1. After a hot start that saw her notch nine points in her first four games played, Stalder has been cold with only two assists in her last three games.
· Season To Date: 14GP - 8G - 10A - 18PTS - 70SOG - 4PIM
