Leksand’s Leon Reuterström publicly comes out as transgender, retires from women’s hockey

“From now on, I’m Leon ...”

Leksand’s (SDHL) goaltender Leon Reuterström publicly came out as a transgender man today. He has also announced his retirement from the SDHL and women’s hockey in order begin his physical transition.

The 21-year-old posted a .926 save percentage in 11 games with Leskand in his sixth and final season of SDHL hockey. Earlier in his career Reuterström appeared in a game for Sweden at the 2014 U-18 Women’s World Championships.

Leon shared his announcement on his Instagram account in addition to doing a brief interview for an article published on HockeySverige.se (note: translated with Google Chrome).

“So, I’m actually pretty close to get started with the treatment already in a month, hopefully,” Reuterström explained. “It’s really something I’ve been craving for and it feels like every day has been forever.”

From Leon’s Instagram post (note: translated through Google):

“Now after a long investigation and a long wait, I start a new long journey, to be who I am, but unfortunately without hockey. From now on, I’m Leon and yes, I’m transsexual!”

We at the Ice Garden wish to extend our congratulations to Leon for living his most authentic life and for pursuing his happiness.
