HV71’s Sabina Eriksson Hurt, Alba Gonzalo Returns
Changes in HV71’s net as Eriksson’s season is over.
HV71 goaltender Sabina Eriksson will miss the entire 2018-2019 season, the club announced Wednesday.
Eriksson, 25, suffered a serious knee ligament injury on September 2 during a preseason tournament in Trollhättan with just 27 seconds remaining in the third period. She described it on Instagram as “a pain that tells you ‘now it’s over.’”
When asked for comment, HV71 head coach Lucas Frey told The Ice Garden, ”It is sad news about Sabina but injuries are part of the game.”
Eriksson promised to work toward a return. To fill her absence and help the team’s two young netminders, HV71 has returned to a familiar face: Spanish goaltender Alba Gonzalo. This season she was initially signed with the Naisten Liiga’s Espoo Blues, but she had yet to make her Blues debut prior to returning to Sweden.
The Barcelona native played seven games for the team last year after moving to the SDHL from KJT in Finland’s Naisten Liiga. She joins Lina Jansson and Wilma Nilsson in the crease. At 21 years old, Gonzalo is the oldest of the trio.

Gonzalo is currently with HV71 on a trial basis, according to general manager Peter Ekelund:
“To begin with, we have signed a three-month contract [with Gonzalo] and afterwards we will evaluate the situation.”
HV71’s next game is Sunday, September 16 against Göteborg.
