Group play in 2024 World Championships has finished and the quarterfinal games are set!
As a reminder, every team in Group A advanced while only the top three in Group B. The bottom two teams in Group B - this year China and Denmark - were relegated to Division I-A for 2025.
Quarterfinal Schedule
Finland vs Switzerland
The first quarterfinal game of the tournament is a Group A rematch. Switzerland struggled in group play, finishing in fifth. They did not win a single game, scored the least amount of goals of all 10 teams (three), and allowed the most goals of any team (18). The slight upside is that Switzerland scored two of their three goals in the group game against Finland; however, they did also allow five goals, the second-highest of their games.
Czechia v Germany
Czechia were handily shutout by the USA and Canada but fared well against Finland and Switzerland. The only allowed one goal in their two games against the latter two teams, thought they allowed 11 against the former two.
Germany largely rolled through Group B play. Their closest contest was a 1-0 win over Sweden, which accounted for half of their goals allowed (two).
Canada v Sweden
Canada's only loss in Group A was to archrival USA in the final group game. They tied for the least goals allowed with Germany: two. They also lead the tournament in penalty kill in group play.
On the flip side, Sweden was first in power play, so that match up will be something to keep an eye on. They only lost to Germany on a deflected shot from the point after two and a half periods of solid hockey.
USA v Japan
These two teams met in group play in 2023 and 2022 when Japan was up in Group A. It was a good test for Japan and this game will be the same. They didn't have a great showing in Group B, probably a surprise given they were just recently moved down a group. They can't be relegated to Division I-A, but the key here will be to see if they can move back up to Group A for 2025 by winning the knockout placement games.
Semifinals up next
The winners of each quarterfinal game will advance to the semifinals on Saturday, April 13. Both games will be on NHL Network in the US, TSN1 in Canada, plus each other country's channels. Teams will be reseeded following the quarterfinals.
