A look at Team Canada’s 4 Nations roster

Canada is going with a younger roster at the beginning of this new Olympic cycle

Yesterday Hockey Canada announced its roster for the 2018 4 Nations Cup. This 23-player roster is significantly younger than the veteran group that Canada sent to the 2018 Olympics and features five players who will be attending their first 4 Nations Cup for Canada.

“This will be a good test for our players and program as we enter into a new four-year cycle leading into the next Olympics,” Gina Kingsbury, Hockey Canada’s director of women’s national teams, shared in the program’s press release. “We have a committed and determined group of players looking to establish themselves as the top hockey nation among the best nations in the world.”

  • Forwards: Rebecca Johnston, Laura Stacey, Sarah Fillier, Jillian Saulnier, Melodie Daoust, Brianne Jenner, Sarah Nurse, Natalie Spooner, Emily Clark, Marie-Philip Poulin, Loren Gabel, Blayre Turnbull, Sarah Potomak
  • Defenders: Jocelyne Larocque, Laura Fortino, Renata Fast, Halli Krzyzaniak, Jamie Bourbonnais, Micah Zandee-Hart, Katelyn Gosling
  • Goaltenders: Shannon Szabados, Shea Tiley, Emerance Maschmeyer/

This will be the first 4 Nations Cup for Bourbonnais, Fillier, Gabel, Gosling, and goaltender Tiley. Sarah Fillier, 18, is entering her first season of collegiate hockey at Princeton University. She had five points in six games at the U-18 Women’s World Championship last year.

Canada announces final roster for 2018 Olympic Games

There are some big names missing from this roster, including 2018 Olympians Brigette Lacquette, Haley Irwin, Bailey Bram, Jennifer Wakefield, Lauriane Rougeau, Meghan Agosta, Meaghan Mikkelson, Ann-Renée Desbiens, and Geneviève Lacasse. It’s worth mentioning that Agosta, Bram, Desbiens, Irwin, Lacasse, Mikkelson, and Rougeau were all unable to attend Canada’s Fall Festival Camp. Mikkelson is expecting while Bram and Irwin both were announced as taking some time off from the beginning of the CWHL season. Wakefield is currently playing in the SDHL as well.
