Series of the Week: Cornell vs Mercyhurst

Game 1: No. 6/6 Cornell 0, (RV) Mercyhurst 0

Friday’s game was truly a battle of goaltenders. Jorden Mattison held it down in net for Mercyhurst, making 41 saves, including five in overtime.

The game was at 0-0 at the end of OT and had to go to a shootout, where Piper Grober got the extra point for Cornell. The Lakers missed all three shots.

Game 2: No. 6/6 Cornell 1, (RV) Mercyhurst 2

After losing four straight and then tying one, the Lakers absolutely needed to pull out a win. It was a tall order, with Mercyhurst facing the No. 6 team in the nation, but the Lakers finally managed to get back into the win column Saturday night.

Thea Johansson got the scoring going for the Lakers, scoring a power play goal at 13:07 in the first period.

Mercyhurst had seven shots in the second period, but the score remained 1-0 heading into the third.

Four minutes in the third period, Sofia Nuutinen struck, sending the eventual game-winner in the back of the net. It was Nuutinen’s first goal of the season.

Cornell broke through at 12:17 with a goal by Karel Prefontaine to cut the Lakers’ lead in half, but it wasn’t enough, and Mercyhurst completed the upset, winning 2-1 Saturday night.

Freshman Magdalena Luggin was stellar in net, making 43 saves and only allowing one goal. It was Luggin’s first career win and earned her AHA Rookie of the Week.

Weekly Awards:

AHA Forward of the Week: Grace Outwater (Penn State)

Outwater scored two goals against Dartmouth on Saturday, including her first collegiate goal and a power play goal. The freshman now has five points for the season (two goals and three assists).

AHA Goaltender of the Week: Katie DeSa (Penn State)

DeSa swept Dartmouth and only allowed one goal over the weekend. She stopped 15 shots on Friday for a shutout and only allowed one goal on 13 shots on Saturday. DeSa improved to a 5-2-0 record for the season.

AHA Defender of the Week: Emma Pickering (RIT)

AHA Rookie of the Week: Magdalena Luggin (Mercyhurst)

Looking Forward:

The Icebreaker Tournament

The Nittany Lions will head to Columbus to play in the Icebreaker Tournament this weekend. They’ll face off against No. 12/13 Cornell on Friday and then will either play against No. 2/2 Ohio State or Stonehill on Saturday. Penn State has the chance to face off against some great nonconference teams and show why they deserve to be in the mix. Tournaments are always fun, and the Icebreaker Series should be an exciting watch.

No. 6/8 St. Lawrence vs. (RV) RIT

RIT received a vote in the USCHO poll this week, just in time for the Tigers to face off against their second ranked opponent of the season. RIT has been on a hot start to the season and has the best opening record since 2014-15 (5-2-1). Netminder Sarah Coe has been a big part of that, with a 4-0 record and two shutouts so far. Coe is first in all-time saves in program history (2,175) and third in minutes (3,961).
