Behind the Glass: A Whale of a win and MJP breaks Burke’s record
Behind the Glass is our weekly column collecting stories, stats, trends, and thoughts from the world of professional women’s hockey.
NWHL
- The Connecticut Whale ended their 25-game losing streak on Saturday night against the Metropolitan Riveters. Whale newcomer Kendra Broad scored two goals against the Riveters, including a power-play goal in overtime, to snap the Whale’s winless streak.
- Before Whale forward/defender Hanna Beattie scored her first career goal this season on Dec. 28, she played 41 regular season games in the NWHL without lighting the lamp. The game-tying goal she buried on Saturday night as Connecticut’s extra attacker was her third goal in three games. Beattie’s streak was snapped on Sunday against the Pride, but she is now one of five players on the Whale with three or more goals./
- Before scoring two goals against the Whale on Saturday, 2020 NWHL All-Star Kendall Cornine had one goal in her last six games. Cornine has four two-goal games this season and is the Riveters’ leading goal-scorer with 12 goals.
- Boston Pride captain Jillian Dempsey scored a goal 11 minutes into the third period of Boston’s 4-2 win over the Whale on Sunday. That goal was the 30th point of Dempsey’s 2019-20 season, making her one of just three women in NWHL history to reach that milestone. The other two, Hilary Knight and Brianna Decker, also hit 30 points as members of the Pride.
- Beauts’ rookie defender and 2020 NWHL All-Star Marie-Jo Pelletier now holds the NWHL single-season record for power play points in a season. MJP recorded her 11th point on the advantage in her 17th game of the season. The previous record for power play points in an NWHL season was held by former Riveter Courtney Burke (10). Pelletier now has 18 points in 18 games and is tied with Boston’s Kaleigh Fratkin for the lead in scoring among defenders./
Some hockey history was made tonight. @mj_pelletier (D) picked up a secondary assist on this PPG by @BuffaloBeauts captain @corinnebuie. This was MJP's 11th PP point of the season, a new single-season high for a skater in the @NWHL. #NotoriousMJPhttps://t.co/kxhstDyEjO

- MODO’s Marion Allemoz had two goals and two assists — one primary — in Sunday’s statement 6-4 win over Brynäs. Allemoz scored both of her goals, the first of which proved to be the game-winner, in the second period. She now leads MODO in scoring with nine goals and nine assists in 25 GP.
- Linnea Hedin scored the overtime winner on the power play in AIK’s 1-0 win over Göteborg HC on Saturday. The goal, Hedin’s fourth of the season, was scored just nine seconds into AIK’s power play in sudden death. Hedin leads all AIK defenders in SOG (52) and has just one assist in addition to her four goals this season.
- Luleå Hockey/MSSK is 11-1 in their last 12 games after their 7-2 rout of Brynäs on Sunday. Luleå hasn’t lost a game since Dec. 20 and they are now 10 points behind HV71 in the SDHL standings with a record of 21-6-1 (19-6-1-1-1-0)./
ZhHL
- Team East defeated Team West in the 2020 ZhHL All-Star Game by a final score of 4-1. Of the four goalies who saw action in the game, Agidel Ufa’s Anna Prugova had the best performance. She stopped all 24 shots she faced in 30:17 of hockey — Shenzhen KRS Vanke Rays netminder Kimberly Newell played the second half of the game and stopped 19 of the 20 shots she saw./
Behold one of the most amazing and peculiar things I have ever seen in hockey from the 2020 @whl_ru All-Star Weekend. Yes. Those are ski masks and they are holding their sticks like guns. Yes. They dimmed the lights. Yes. That's a firecracker hockey taped to a puck. pic.twitter.com/0oWGhMOchn
