Whale, Whale, Whale, wet do we have here

It’s time for another installment of Behind the Glass — our weekly column collecting stories, stats, trends, and thoughts from the world of professional women’s hockey.

  • On Sunday the Connecticut Whale won their first game since Feb. 2, 2018. The Whale haven’t won a game by a two-goal margin since Feb. 26, 2017.
  • Last weekend’s victory over the Metropolitan Riveters was also Meeri Räisänen’s first win the NWHL. There have now been goaltenders from five different nations to record victories in the NWHL.
  • Shannon Doyle’s game-winning goal was the third of her NWHL career and her first goal since the league’s inaugural season. In the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons combined, Doyle put 51 shots on net without scoring a goal./

“Anytime you have a player like Doyle — who’s one of our leaders and has been a captain for the last few years who plays the game the right way and battles and competes so hard every shift — get that reward on the other end in a critical moment in the game is great,” Whale head coach Ryan Equale told The Ice Garden. “You want the players like that to get those rewards when they’re available. It just reinforces and validates all the sacrifices she made throughout the game. For us, we’ll take anyone scoring that goal, but if we have to choose ... Doyle’s a great pick.”

  • Audra Richards of the Metropolitan Riveters has three goals in her last four games. She’s one of just 10 NWHL skaters with three or more goals in the 2018-19 season. Richards is also the only player in that group who has yet to register an assist.
  • Jillian Dempsey (50) is now third all-time in NWHL points behind Kelly Babstock (51) and Brianna Decker (60). She’s also second all-time in NWHL goals (24) behind Decker (28).
  • Gigi Marvin scored what must have been an 178-foot empty-net goal to give the Boston Pride a 4-1 win over the Buffalo Beauts on Nov. 17. There’s no way to be sure, but it’s pretty much gotta be the longest goal scored in NWHL history./
  • This Sunday in Newark, Kimberly Sass will be between the pipes for the Riveters. The last time a Riveters goalie not named Katie Fitzgerald started in a home game was on Dec. 4, 2016. That goaltender was Sojung Shin. (Stick taps to Matt Falkenbury for this one).
  • Hayley Scamurra (five goals, seven assists) of the Buffalo Beauts now has more points than the Riveters (11) or the Whale (four) have goals. Scamurra leads the NWHL in points and primary points (10) this year. In six games this year she’s already matched her primary point total from the 2017-18 season.
  • The Minnesota Whitecaps have four skaters who are shooting north of 24 percent (there are only four combined on the other four NWHL teams). If the season ended today, the 14.7 Sh% of the Whitecaps would be the highest in league history. That ain’t gonna happen.
  • Emerance Maschmeyer hasn’t allowed a goal in 207:54 of CWHL hockey. She’s posted three consecutive shutouts and has made at least 63 consecutive saves since Jamie Lee Rattray of the Markham Thunder beat her on Oct. 21.
  • Maschmeyer now has 11 career shutouts in her CWHL career, which is good for third all-time in that category. She currently trails Les Canadiennes de Montreal legend Charline Labonte, who is second all-time, by two shutouts. Amazingly, 37.93 percent of Maschmeyer’s wins with Les Canadiennes and the Calgary Inferno have been shutout victories.

  • Lauren Dahm leads the Worcester Blades in Sv% (.900), GSAA (-0.99), GAA (3.98), and has faced 39.76 SA60, but she’s only been given one start this season per Crease Giants’ numbers.
  • The Toronto Furies have lost four games in a row, all to the Inferno and Les Canadiennes. They have been out-scored 18-6 in that span and have been out-shot in 10 of their last 12 periods of hockey.
  • Alex Carpenter of the Shenzhen KRS Vanke Rays has now played in as many games this year (13) as she did in 2017-18. Carpenter has already eclipsed her point total from her rookie CWHL season. She’s currently tied with Marie-Philip Poulin in points (13), but Poulin has five games in hand./
  • Ann-Sophie Bettez has put up eight points in her last three games after putting up three points in her first five games of the 2018-19 season. Yeah, Ann-Sophie has still got it.
  • In 13 games with Shenzhen this season, Rachel Llanes has matched her personal best for points in a CWHL season. She had 12 points in 23 games as a rookie with the Boston Blades back in 2013-14.
  • Kennedy Marchment’s 20 goals in 22 games leads both Linköping HC and the entire SDHL. For some context: her best NCAA year was her junior season in which she scored 20 goals in 36 games at St. Lawrence University.
  • Sofia Reideborn, 19, has the best save percentage of any SDHL goalie with a losing record this year. She’s posted a .924 Sv% while facing 42.11 SA60 for SDE HF. Last season Reideborn had a .910 Sv% against a 38.52 SA60. /
