Caroline Ouellette approaches CWHL milestone

When it comes to the greats of women’s hockey, many names come to mind. Hayley Wickenheiser, Cassie Campbell-Pascall, Julie Chu ... this list goes on. One name that should be on your radar during this conversation is Caroline Ouellette. After taking over the captaincy for Team Canada in the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Ouellette began to stake her claim as one of the greatest of all time. And this weekend, she will attempt to make that claim even stronger.

Currently sitting at 299 career points in the CWHL, which she reached during a four-goal performance against the Boston Blades on Sunday, Ouellette could reach 300 this weekend. As Les Canadiennes de Montreal prepare to play their heritage game against the Calgary Inferno at the Bell Centre on Saturday, all eyes will be on Ouellette as she approaches the milestone.

Record breaking is nothing new to Ouellette. She broke the CWHL scoring record in 2015 when she hit the 235-point mark, surpassing Jayna Hefford’s record of 234 points. Since then, she’s continued to hold the CWHL points record. With 128 career goals, she is also approaching Hefford’s record of 130. It’s possible that we see both milestones reached this weekend.

This accomplishment will add to a growing list for Ouellette. Throughout her career, Ouellette has built quite the resume for herself:

• 4 Olympic gold medals
• 6 IIHF World Championship golds
• 3 Clarkson Cup championships
• Angela James Bowl — 2010-11 (recognizing the season’s top point scorer for the CWHL)
• Top 10 all-time in NCAA scoring (229 career points)/

Adding to all of this, Caroline Ouellette is also a member of the unofficial Triple Gold Club, as one of only 17 women to win a Clarkson Cup, Olympic gold, and IIHF World Championship gold. While this title is not officially recognized by Hockey Canada or the IIHF (yet), that fact doesn’t take away from Ouellette’s career success.

It’s not all about stats for Ouellette; she is also leaving her mark on the game away from the arena. Ouellette co-founded AthleticHub.com, an online network providing resources to help student athletes navigate the recruitment process. She also serves as an ambassador for Right to Play. She is a proven leader, on and off the ice.

When it comes to trailblazers in the world of women’s hockey, Caroline Ouellette sits comfortably among the greatest players of all time, because — simply put — she is one of them. And this weekend, we might get to see one of the greats make history.
