Dam Good: Jaycee Magwood gets MODO rolling

It was a busy week for MODO. They opened the week with a Tuesday showdown against Leksand, which they won 3-0, before locking horns with HV71 in a two-game series over the weekend. It was also a big week for Canadian Jaycee Magwood, the USports alumnae (University of Regina) who has been one of MODO’s top players this year.

Magwood started her week with a two-goal performance against Leksand to score her eighth and ninth goals of the season. She was kept off the board on Saturday against HV71 but roared back to life and carved her name all over the box score on Sunday. Magwood picked up four primary points — a goal and three primary assists — and had a point in all three periods against HV71 in Sunday’s 6-3 win.

With her play this year Magwood, 23, is just one more example of players reaching their prime after their collegiate careers are over. She played four years of CIS/USports hockey and her best single season in terms of production was her senior year, in 2019-20, when she racked up 11 goals and 10 assists in 26 games.

This year, Magwood has 10 goals and 10 assists in 24 games. She’s tied with Jennifer Wakefield, Sarah Bujold, and Jessica Healey as the seventh-highest scoring North American skater in the SDHL. Despite missing three of MODO’s 27 games, Magwood leads the team in scoring. That is quite a feat on a team with a couple of members of the French national team.

• Goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordström stopped all 29 of SDE’s shots on Friday in Linköping’s 3-0 win. It was a strong bounce-back game after allowing four goals to HV71 earlier in the week. Nordström, 18, has had a special first year in the SDHL. She has a .942 save percentage and a 6-2-0 record as the backup to Stephanie Neatby, who also has a .942 Sv%. Linköping’s goaltending this year has been absolutely top-shelf.
• On Friday, Luleå’s dynamic duo of Emma Nordin and Michela Cava both turned in five-point performances to lift their club to a 6-0 win over Göteborg. The following day, Nordin picked up two more points — Cava also picked one up — to cap off a seven-point weekend. Cava is now just five goals shy of her single-season best (27) in the SDHL, set in 2018-19 with MODO./
• Lara Stalder had a four-point masterpiece against Djurgården on Wednesday. The Swiss star forward is well on her way to an MVP season. Stalder now has 24 goals and 43 assists on the season. That’s four points shy of her 71-point opus in 2019-20. Will anyone can catch her?/
