Dam Good: Kennedy Marchment makes statement against Linköping

In 2018-19, Kennedy Marchment established herself as a star in the SDHL by leading Linköping in scoring with 52 points. On Wednesday, she returned to Linköping’s Saab Arena as a member of HV71. And she put on a show.

Five minutes into the first period Marchment was awarded a penalty shot and she delivered in style. Honestly.

Because one goal is never enough, Marchment scored again in the second period to put HV71 on cruise control to a 2-0 victory that was preserved by a 29-save shutout from Alba Gonzalo. HV71 lost by a score of 3-2 to Brynäs on Saturday, but Marchment again made her presence known. She scored the game-tying goal in the second period before Brynäs answered back just three minutes later. On Sunday, Marchment scored again and picked up two more helpers to help lift HV71 to a 6-0 victory over Leksand.

All in all, it was a Dam Good performance from Marchment, who now has seven goals in as many games and six assists. She’s tied for the scoring lead on HV71 with linemate and veteran Danielle Stone. The Canadian forward had 64 points in 36 games last year when she finished second in the league in scoring behind Lara Stalder.

Three Crowns

Here are three performances worthy of hardware from the last week of SDHL action.

1. German netminder Jule Flötgen slammed the door shut on MODO on Sunday in AIK’s 2-0 win. Flötgen made 37 stops in the shutout and, along with AIK’s penalty killers, denied three MODO power plays. It was a much-deserved first win of the season. Through 225 minutes of action, the netminder has a .923 save percentage this year.
2. Big Swiss forward Dominique Rüegg scored two goals and picked up an assist in Leskand’s 5-3 win over Göteborg on Saturday. Prior to Rüegg’s Saturday salvo, she had just one point — a goal — through her first five games of the season. This is her first season in the SDHL after spending her entire career in her native Switzerland.
3. Danielle Stone had her second hat trick of the season on Sunday in HV71’s 6-0 rout of Leksand. Stone also had a goal and an assist on Saturday, so this was a four-goal weekend for the veteran forward. Life is definitely good playing on HV71’s top line with Marchment. Stone now has nine goals and four assists in seven games.
