How to Watch: 2019 Rivalry Series

The 2019 Rivalry Series kicks off today! The exhibition series between the U.S. and Canada features three games over five days.

It’s been a big month for women’s hockey. Some of the most familiar names from the greatest rivalry in sports played roles in renewing the spotlight after the 2018 Olympics. Both Kendall Coyne Schofield and Brianna Decker grabbed national headlines at the NHL All-Star Skills Competition in San Jose.

The 2019 Rivalry Series should help women’s hockey stay in the spotlight, especially as the NWHL and CWHL are both heading into the tail end of their seasons. Slowly, but surely, we’re getting an idea of what some of the playoff match-ups are going to look like and there will be a lot of star power from both the U.S. and Canadian national teams battling for the Clarkson and Isobel Cup.

The games will be televised in both Canada (TSN and RDS) and the U.S. (NHL Network).

This series comes at a pivotal moment for NCAA games so both countries opted to not take any college players.

New Faces

The biggest storyline for both teams are the players in their first senior team event.

Buffalo Beauts rookie Savannah Harmon and Beauts veteran Hayley Scamurra will be playing for Team USA for the first time at any level. Neither had experience with a team or camp before 2018. Harmon had a standout career at Clarkson University that included two national titles. She was also a top-10 Patty Kazmaier Award finalist.

Scamurra played her way into contention for the national team in the NWHL. This season, she has 19 points in 13 games. Boston Pride goaltender Katie Burt earned her first senior team spot as well.

Familiar Faces

Both teams have added players from previous cycles back into the mix. Perhaps most notable are Alex Carpenter and Megan Bozek on Team USA. Michelle Picard from the 2014 Olympic team is also on the roster.
