How to Watch the 2020 Beanpot

It’s time to get those Beans!

When: The semifinal games are Tuesday, Feb. 4. Northeastern University plays Harvard in the 5 p.m. game while Boston University and Boston College face off in the 8 p.m. game.

The consolation and finals are Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. respectively.

Where: Walter Brown Arena at Boston University. The location rotates between the four schools every year.

How: If you’re in the Boston area either of the Tuesdays you buy tickets at the Walter Brown box office.

If you aren’t there’s a variety of viewing options this year! In New England, the games will be on television on NESNplus and streamed on NESNgo. It will also be streamed on CBS All Access. If you have cable, it might be free. If you don’t, there’s a free one week trial which should get you both Tuesdays games. Otherwise, it is $6 a month.

Canadian fans wanting to tune in have similar options as well as TSN GO.

Last Year: BU won their first Beanpot as a varsity program, 3-2 over Harvard. Previously, they had won in 1981 when they were still a club team.

This Year: It very well could be a two dog race this year as BU and Northeastern come in hot, especially against their semifinal opponents who have both had up and down seasons so far.

BU has a veteran team who are all clicking together at the right times. Jesse Compher was out for a portion of the beginning of the season and currently has 20 points in 18 games. Sammy Davis is also averaging over a point per game with 30 in 27 games. With the chance to repeat as Beanpot champions at home on the line, the Terriers will be hungry for some beans.

BC has struggled to find themselves this season. The Eagles had a large amount of turnover due to graduation and transfers. While a tough start to the season was expected, they haven’t quite come together as many would have thought by February. They tied the 1 and 2 seeds Minnesota and Wisconsin respectively in November before dropping the next five games in a row, all of which were against Beanpot opponents. However, they come in to the tournament having won three of their last five and with something to prove.

Northeastern was last in the 2019 Beanpot after falling to BU in the semifinals. This season, they’re a team to be reckoned with, in the conversation to at least make it to the Frozen Four. Alina Müller is lethal, no surprise there, with 49 points in 27 games. Aerin Frankel put herself on the national map after an impressive display with Team USA in the second Rivalry Series game. The Huskies recently locked up Hockey East regular season championship so they’ll be looking to add another trophy, maybe filled with beans this time.

Harvard’s season has been a bit of an up and down ride. They beat and tied then-seventh ranked Princeton and beat then-ninth ranked Boston College early in the season, but the Crimson has also struggled against higher ranked teams. They have yet to play Northeastern so their semifinal matchup is a brand new one.
