Kaleigh Fratkin returns to the NWHL, signs with Boston Pride

Boston Pride head coach Thomas Poeck confirms that Fratkin has joined the Pride.

Earlier this week, Mike Murphy tweeted that a founding member of the NWHL might be on her way back to the league.

All-Star defender, Kaleigh Fratkin was linked not with her inaugural season team (the Connecticut Whale), nor her sophomore season team (the then New York Riveters). Instead, word around the NWHL media mill was that Fratkin would return to her college hometown of Boston.

The Ice Garden spoke to Boston Pride head coach Thomas Poeck over the phone this morning, who confirmed the Boston University alumna and former Blades defender will practice with the team on Friday.

When asked if Fratkin has indeed joined the Pride, he responded, “She did. She hasn’t practiced with us yet … on Friday she will practice.” The first year Pride coach heard word Fratkin might be available. The two had a few conversations before ultimately deciding to move forward with the signing.

Fratkin, who was reported to be moving to the D.C area in the offseason, tweeted yesterday that she was driving the eight hours to Beantown.

Fratkin is a physical defender who can contribute offensively. She tallied six goals and 19 assists in her first two NWHL seasons (42 games). Poeck is expecting a lot from his team defensively and Fratkin is the type of player that can make things happen from the blue line. She’s also an established weapon on the power play.

“We’re glad to have her and I’m sure she can help us out,” said Poeck. Friday’s practice is the last preparation for the team before visiting the Connecticut Whale. Boston has yet to defeat the Whale this season. Will the addition of Kaleigh Fratkin - a former Whale alternate captain - give the Pride the edge this weekend? We’ll soon find out.

Game time is set for Sunday, December 10 at 2:30 pm at Terry Conners Ice Rink.
