NWHL Goal of the Week: Welcome to the show, Mikyla Grant-Mentis
Now that is how you make a debut
There were a lot of candidates to choose from in the final week of the 2019–20 NWHL regular season for The Ice Garden’s Goal of the Week. Allie Thunstrom had a hat trick on Saturday to finish the season with 24(!) goals, Jayne Lewis put home a beauty in her NWHL debut, Madison Packer scored a big goal playing in her first game after we learned that she was a mom-to-be, and Sam Donovan and Sarah Schwenzfeier both had beautiful deflection goals.
But the nod this week goes to Buffalo Beauts newcomer Mikyla Grant-Mentis, who scored this beauty against Metropolitan Riveters netminder Sam Walther.
Making a move like this in your pro debut requires an ample amount of talent and confidence, which is probably why Grant-Mentis was able to score again in her second NWHL game on Sunday. This was a real power move that required great hands, and she pulled it off effortlessly.
Grant-Mentis skated primarily with Taylor Accursi and Corinne Buie last weekend, so that will be a trio to keep an eye on this Friday in the Play-In Game between the Beauts and the Connecticut Whale. Will the addition of Merrimack’s two stars be enough to guide Buffalo to another appearance in the Isobel Cup Final? We’ll soon find out.
