On the Internet: PWHL Team Name Ideas

We've finally got a date for team name announcements! On September 9, we should be getting team names and hopefully logos and colourways.

The teams have been teasing these potential names with social media posts. And of course, fans and players alike have their own ideas of what the potential team names could be.

Here are some of my favourites that have been brainstormed.

Minnesota

Minnesota's rumored name from last season was Superior, and some people still think that could be the name.

Some other options include a winter theme with names like; Frost, Blizzard, Freeze, Storm, Northern Lights, or Ice.

There's also a few people who want to bring back the PHF/NWHL name and go with the Whitecaps.

I'm inclined to side with the idea of Reign, especially with the purple, but I'm not convinced, based on Toronto's teasers.

My choice: Just anything other than Superior, please.

Boston

Before the teaser on September 6, most people were leaning towards Wicked, the rumored name from last season. The quote "Something is coming" could reference "Something wicked this way comes".

However, the addition of the wave in the teaser images makes that seem less likely.

I really like some of these water name options:

PWHL Boston player Lexie Adzija shared on TikTok that she thinks it'll be Boston Wave or Boston Storm, and clarified that she doesn't know the actual name.

My choice: I saw someone say Boston Fleet and I like that, but my choice would be Wave.

Montréal

Montréal's rumored name from last season was Echo, and after the first post, many people thought Echo would fit with "Something is calling".

This one was the least understandable to me, as it really just is a team photo. Both Alyssa and I immediately said Montréal Team when we saw the image.

The new teaser image of the Bridge really threw everyone off, and I feel more confused than I did before.

Many people joked about the Montréal Bridge or Montréal Traffic.

My choice: I don't hate Echo. Let's go with that.

Toronto

When Toronto dropped the image with the queen behind it, I got super excited. This one has the most options and seems quite well thought out.

Toronto forward Emma Maltais asked her teammates what they think the team name will be, giving us ideas like: Reign, Monarchs, Queens, Majesty, and Sovereigns.

Olivia Knowles offered the name Squall, which I really like, but doesn't seem to fit the royal theme.

With the last teaser image being the city, things got a little harder to understand. I immediately thought of the Toronto Six, the name of the Toronto PHF team.

Some people have been saying that the photo shows Queen's Park in Toronto, which fits the royal theme.

My choice: Queens sounds like a beer league team. I like Reign, Monarchs or Majesty.

Ottawa

Pretty much everyone seems convinced that Ottawa will be the Alert or Alerts, as rumored last season.

Emily Clark and Lexie Adzija both said on TikTok that they think it'll be Alert (with an s or without).

A few rumors on Twitter were Surge, Reds, or Atomic.

Although Alert isn't the most popular name, it does follow the history of Ottawa hockey, which is a nice touch.

My choice: Alert, not Alerts.

New York

New York Sound was probably the worst rumored name from last year, and there is some speculation that it'll be the team name for this year.

"Turn the volume up" could very much mean Sound, but there are a few alternatives that I like.

A few people have said Sirens would be a good name, which could play off of vehicle sirens or the mythical siren that would lure sailors to their death.

One option from Emma Maltais' TikTok is Empire, which I think is really strong.

My choice: New York Empire.
