PHF Goals of Week: March. 19-20

Sweeps, three OT’s, and a race for first right down to the end.

The last weekend of the regular season brought a massive amount of excitement as it came down to the final game to determine who would be the first place team at the end of the season. It also came down to overtime..three times! While I’m sad to see the season go, I’m happy to report there were some amazing goals to get us here and the next time you hear from me, it will be playoffs, baby!

First up, we saw Toronto head to Danbury on Saturday to take on the Whale. Either way it could have turned out, these two teams were locked in for first and second place in the final standings. For the Whale, however, there may have been a bit more on the line as the only remaining Founding Four team to have never come in first place or won an Isobel Cup.

That’s why plays like this from Taylor Girard never stopped. Every time the Six would go up, the Whale fired right back. Girard is responsible for a lot of the scoring this season, and that was no different on Saturday.

Natalie Marcuzzi was able to give it right back though with a five-hole shot mid-second period. Flashy.

Amanda Conway was able to tie it up yet again with this, what I’m calling the best goal of the weekend. Full on shootout vibes for a breakaway goal to end the second period.

There was a bit more back and forth but ultimately Mikyla Grant-Mentis wanted in on the action and ended things in overtime, 5-4, with this beautiful goal right in front. This set the scene for Sunday, as Connecticut would have to win in regulation to claim first place in the standings.

That night, Buffalo hosted the Boston Pride who went up first with a power play goal. The Beauts, however, were not rolling over. League leading defender in goals, Dominique Kremer tied things up with some aggressive playing. This is how the game would remain until overtime yet again.

In overtime, it’s Buffalo’s Kennedy Ganser who gets the job done for a well-needed win in Buffalo.

The following day, the same matchups met again and this time Connecticut was not messing around. They knew they had to win in regulation to win the season and they managed that...along with so much more. Not only did they had Elaine Chuli her first and only loss of the season, they shut out the Toronto Six 5-0.

After a scoreless first period, it started with this one from Taylor Girard and simply did not stop.

Janine Weber gave the Whale their fourth goal of the game which may not have been the technical game-winner but surely seemed like the one where they all knew the deal had been sealed.

While the top of the standings were complete, two teams closer to the bottom were still battling it out in Buffalo. Sammy Davis makes this list with a great goal to tie up the game in the second period. After a loss on Saturday, you know the Pride came out swinging and that’s proven here.

For the third time this weekend, the game went to overtime as both teams were able to hold  the other off from scoring again. It was Anjelica Diffendal with a power play goal in overtime to win it for Buffalo, sweep the Pride, and end the regular season. It’s never a dull moment.

The single-site postseason tournament kicks off in Tampa on Friday, March 25 with the Isobel Cup Final happening Monday, March 28.
