Plays of the Week: Breakaways galore

Seems like everyone was trying a fancy breakaway move on this week’s edition of #TIGTop4.

There’s a lot of women’s hockey that deserves to be showcased, and we want to highlight the very best every week.

Each week, we’ll ask for you to send us the top plays you see in women’s hockey, whether they be from college games, pro games, international contests or anything in-between using the hashtag #TIGTop4 (It helps us a lot if you include pictures or GIFs of the play).

From the picks you send us, we’ll select our top four, and then it’s up to you to vote for the best women’s hockey play of the week on our Twitter. Here are the top plays after this week’s vote:

4. Iya Gavrilova’s goal

After not playing for the first few games for the Inferno, Gavrilova has really started making her presence known on the reigning Clarkson Cup champs. In a 5-1 win over the Blades this morning, Gavrilova danced around a defender to tuck home the puck behind the Boston netminder for her second goal of the evening.

3. Meghan Grieves’ goal

Hey, look! It’s not just me who’s a little salty this one didn’t finish higher in the voting this week.

One of the things the Blade’s have improved on immensely this year is offense, and this goal was a beauty orchestrated by Tara Watchorn. Watchorn send a pass through the neutral zone that had Grieves’ name written all over it, and she didn’t miss when she got the breakaway chance against Calgary.

2. Kristyn Capizzano’s shorthanded breakaway

Got a couple of nice breakaway plays that made it into the poll this week, and Capizzano’s breakaway goal against Northeastern didn’t disappoint, picking up 33% of the vote this week.

The best part of this play isn’t just the goal, but the defensive effort that Capizzano put in to take the Huskies’ passing lane away so that she had the chance in the first place. Well done.

1. McGovern’s gorgeous tap-in

But even Capizzano’s shorthanded tally couldn’t catch Katie McGovern’s beautiful tap-in off a pass from teammate Jessica Healey, which earned nearly half of our votes (47%) this week.

In what turned out to be a 4-1 win, McGovern tapped home her second of the period and UMD’s third goal of the night, but it was Healey who made the beautiful pass across the crease to her. All McGovern had to do was put down her stick and direct the puck into a wide-open net.
