Plays of the week: New York won a thing!
Mélodie Daoust is still phenomenal, New York won their first game of the year and more in this week’s top plays of the week.
There’s a lot of women’s hockey that deserves to be showcased, and we want to highlight the very best every week.
Each week, we’ll ask for you to send us the top plays you see in women’s hockey, whether they be from college games, pro games, international contests or anything in-between using the hashtag #TIGTop4 (It helps us a lot if you include pictures or GIFs of the play).
From the picks you send us, we’ll select our top four, and then it’s up to you to vote for the best women’s hockey play of the week on our Twitter. Here are the top plays after this week’s vote:
4. Daoust’s soaring play
/how did this finish last/
//HOW//
It was relatively close, but alas, Mélodie Daoust’s attempt to fly and score a goal at the same time finished last in our voting this week with 16% of the vote.
Daoust, who cruised through Four Nations and hasn’t stopped since, had a nice breakaway opportunity this past weekend and didn’t throw away her shot. A stutter-step deke allowed her to score before she tripped over the goaltender and knocked the legs out from under a linesman (oops).

3. Cappizano’s breakaway
Ok, I feel a little better about Daoust coming in last when I see this goal again. Wow, it’s a nice one (and thanks @Salzano14 for the GIF).
Kristyn Cappizano got a beautiful feed through the neutral zone that sent her off to the races on UNH’s goalie, sliding the puck to her backhand and tucking it past their netminder. Boston College ended up winning the game 7-1, and Cappizano finished with two goals.
And finally, @BC_WHockey's Kristyn Cappizano had a glorious goal against UNH on a speedy breakaway play. https://t.co/LCj3CTS6Pj

2. Beaut’s overtime winner
Coming in second place this week with 26% of the vote was the Beauts *slightly* controversial overtime win (did it cross the line? Didn’t it? Nobody knows!) Either way, this was a gorgeous play- Emily Pfalzer pinched in, dangled the puck through the slot and fired it at Fitzgerald, who gave up a rebound that was corralled by Shiann Darkangelo and juuuuust barely slid over the line…we think.
So @shidark27 and @EmilyPfalzer are trying to win @TheIceGarden's #TIGTop4, I'm guessing. #NYRvsBUF pic.twitter.com/08lZz4V7QB

1. Fitzgerald’s first win
Congratulations, Riveters fans! You did the thing! With 37% of the vote, Katie Fitzgerald and New York’s first win of the year handily won this week’s poll.
The showdown between New York and Buffalo was one of this week’s highlights, and it came down to a goaltending duel between Buffalo’s Amanda Leveille and Katie Fitzgerald of New York. Fitzgerald, who’s rapidly making a case for the No. 1 goalie position on the Riveters, put on a show this weekend, making 24 stops in her first ever professional victory. And really, Fitzgerald was one of this weekend’s MVP, playing incredibly well during both games.
