Unsung Heroes of the New York Sirens

There are plenty of stars on the Sirens, but what about the players who are contributing a bit more quietly?

Or should I say... un-Sirened heroes?

The Sirens have more than their fair share of stars. Alex Carpenter can take over a game when she chooses to and is tied for third in the league in goals scored. Sarah Fillier leads the league with 15 points and is the frontrunner for Rookie of the Year. Corinne Schroeder posted the first two shutouts of the season back-to-back and is in the top three for both save percentage and GAA. But there are a few other players who, while they may not win awards for it, have been quietly excellent for the New York team so far this season.

Micah Zandee-Hart

Micah Zandee-Hart has quietly been one of the Sirens’ best blueliners this year, stepping up in a big way while Ella Shelton missed 6 games with injury. She leads the team in time on ice by a wide margin at 312:57 while playing on the top defensive pairing alongside new addition Maja Nylen-Persson. In addition to her defensive prowess, she’s been producing offensively as well. She has 7 points in 14 games, already far surpassing her total of 3 points during the 2024 season. Her ice time is a sign that she is trusted in all situations and against opponents’ top offensive threats. If she continues playing like she has been, she is certain to be a significant part of the team’s success going forward.

Jade-Downie Landry

Jade Downie-Landry has been exactly what the Sirens need in their bottom six. While she has not scored much so far this season, with only 2 points, it’s not for lack of trying. She has 26 shots so far, good for 6th on the team, and is averaging 9.62 shots per 60. Though Downie-Landry is slightly snakebitten right now (she has only 3.8% shooting percentage), she regularly produces strong chances while playing a role in the bottom six. She is already doing everything she needs to be as a reliable third-line center, so if the bounces start going her way a little more often and she can find the back of the net, she’s likely to be able to contribute even more.

Gabby Rosenthal

Gabby Rosenthal has been an incredibly versatile player in her short time so far with the Sirens. She moves up and down the lineup as needed, which has been necessary this year as injuries have occasionally bedeviled the team. She has been excellent in the faceoff circle so far, winning 56.8% of the 118 faceoffs she’s taken. Rosenthal has plus-7 rating on the season. While plus-minus is not the most reliable stat without context, it does signal that the team is outscoring opponents with her on the ice. Of the most note might be her steadily climbing ice time over the course of the season. In the first five games of the season, she averaged 11:41 minutes of ice time a night, and in the last five she has averaged 15:09. It’s clear that the coaching staff’s trust in her is growing, and with it, so is her role on the team.
