PWHL Jersey Power Rankings
The new PWHL jerseys are here, so which team has the best ones?
We had names, we had logos, and now the new PWHL jerseys are here! As TIG’s resident jersey enthusiast, it was a debut I was waiting on with bated breath. I have a lot of thoughts on the new threads we'll see on the ice this season, but I’m not alone. I’ve enlisted my colleagues Mike, Elisha, Giselle, Maya, J, and LJ to help me rank each jersey and pick our favorite for what I’m calling the “TIG Jersey Power Rankings.” Each of us scored every team’s set on a scale of one to five, with one being “I hate it” and five being “I love it." The average of our individual rankings is the final score. Here’s what we thought.
6. Ottawa Charge
Mike Murphy: 3. I don't have any strong feelings on the Charge design beyond liking that they snuck some gray in there. I am waiting to see what these look like on the ice to see if I grow more fond of the direction Ottawa took.
Elisha Côté: 4. I don't love Ottawa's jerseys but I think they are still really solid. The more I look at them, the more I like them. I think a lot of people who were not fans of the logo will change their minds because of how nice it looks on a jersey.
Giselle Velazquez: 2. Eh.
Maya Smith: 2. These are my least favorite because I wanted the logo to look good for a change and it doesn't. And there's this weird gray stripe??? Where did that come from? Just stick to red, yellow, and white, please.
J Gray: 3. Using two shades of gray really works for these jerseys, it allows the goldenrod accent to shine. The layers of stripes at the base bring just enough busyness. My only quibble is that the goldenrod stripe on the light gray stripe looks like a road, and I'm not sure if it was intentional.
LJ Bachenheimer: 1. I think these are the worst of the bunch. Ottawa had great colors and a mediocre logo to work with, so I was hoping they’d use the best of the former to compensate for the latter. Instead, they added some unnecessary gray and ended up muddying their aesthetic even further. I think the logo stands out nicely against the red home jerseys, but that’s about it. I’m not a fan of these.
Final Score: 2.5 / 5
5. New York Sirens
Mike Murphy: 4. It's so refreshingly unique and has great colors. I am still not sold on the logo itself but the colors absolutely hook me in.
Elisha Côté: 1. I don’t like the colors in this jersey. I also find "Sirens" to be even harder to read as there isn't much contrast between the lettering and the rest of the jersey.
Giselle Velazquez: 3. I love that pop of orange. I'll give them that, but other than that it's fine.
Maya Smith: 4. I feel like a lot of people don't like these, but I do! The one thing I don't like is the bottom stripes, I feel like they make the players look really large.
J Gray: 4. I like the balance between the teal, navy, white, and orange. I'm getting PWHPA Team Sonnet vibes from the home jersey and Team Harvey's from the road jersey, but those were my favorite of that set, so I won't complain. The logo looks great on both jerseys.
LJ Bachenheimer: 3. I love the colors, especially the teal, but I’m not sold on the chevron-ish sleeve stripes. I think the away jersey actually has the better look- the colors pop more on the white background.
Final Score: 3.17 / 5
4. Minnesota Frost
Mike Murphy: 2. I have been asking for a purple jersey for a long time - this was not what I had in mind. However, this does make me want to drink Gatorade.
Elisha Côté: 2. I love the simplicity of this jersey and the colors; however, I wish they had played more with the frost name as the logo is already very basic.
Giselle Velazquez: 5. I am biased because purple is my favorite color. The shades used here along with the logo go so well together and have such harmony too. This is a 10/5 jersey style and colorway for me!
Maya Smith: 4. The logo is positioned weirdly, making a ton of odd white space!! But otherwise, I like it.
J Gray: 4. These jerseys look a little unbalanced because of the shape of the logo, but the logo itself looks fantastic- great depth, love the glossy finish. I like the numbers on the back being outlined in light purple, they should really pop from that, particularly on the road. However, the light purple feels a little like they wanted to do pink, but didn't want to do pink. Overall, solid, I like them.
LJ Bachenheimer: 4. If the logo was shifted just a little lower on the torso, the home jerseys would be near-perfect. The balance of the dark purple and lighter accent shade is wonderful and the stripes are classic and sharp. The white jersey is a lot weaker. Without the outline, the logo fades into the open space on the chest.
Final Score: 3.5 / 5
3. Boston Fleet
Mike Murphy: 4. This jersey and design are just really solid. Nothing flashy or risky, just a little bit of flavor to make the Fleet feel like they have their own look in a region known for iconic jerseys. Smart.
Elisha Côté: 4. I really love this jersey and it's exactly what I was hoping for, but I also wish they had kept the silver that was in last year's jerseys.
Giselle Velazquez: 4. The colors! The logo! So good!
Maya Smith: 4. These are... a lot. There are just too many stripes. But I love the color and I like that some of the stripes are waves.
J Gray: 2. The mint green seems a tad overpowering. The stripes at the base seem to want to evoke ripples, but I don't know if it works. However, I love the details of the waves in the logo and the shadows around it giving it depth. I think they have the potential to look great on the ice.
LJ Bachenheimer: 4. The Fleet have probably my favorite striping pattern in the whole league. It’s a lot of stripes, which can be a little busy, but I think it actually lends the design a retro feel, almost calling back to the barber pole designs of early hockey sweaters. For a city with as much hockey history as Boston, that seems fitting. However, I think the mint green is a lot, especially on the white jersey, so I wish there was something else to help break it up.
Final Score: 3.67 / 5
2. Toronto Sceptres
Mike Murphy: 5. I don't love the name but I absolutely love this jersey. These came out better than I expected and I can't wait to see them on the ice.
Elisha Côté: 2. Much like New York’s, I am not a fan of the colors in this jersey, but it was what I was expecting from Toronto.
Giselle Velazquez: 3. It works! The pop of yellow is beautiful! I do love the details on the logo a lot and I appreciate the effort of showing how versatile a jersey can be regardless of fashion taste which is so inspiring too!
Maya Smith: 5. I really didn't want to like this but I did! I honestly don't see any flaws (even though I'm not a super big fan of the logo), everything looks great.
J Gray: 5. The blue and gold play off each other perfectly, making the logo pop. On the road jerseys, you can see more contrast between the two shades of gold, and they pop there too. Two well-designed, beautiful sweaters.
LJ Bachenheimer: 5. These are a slam dunk. The color balance is perfect on both the home and away jerseys, allowing the vibrancy of the blue and gold to really pop. I wasn’t sold on the logo when it first debuted, but it’s growing on me a lot now that I can see it on a jersey. The striping pattern is simple but stylish, and I think it especially works on the white aways. Also, Toronto had the best jersey promo post, hands down.
Final Score: 4.17 / 5
1. Montréal Victoire
Mike Murphy: 5. Outrageously good.
Elisha Côté: 5. I LOVE these jerseys. Not only do I think Montréal has the best logo, but their jerseys are beautiful. I really love how they used the different colors, especially for the away jerseys.
Giselle Velazquez: 4. The logo is lights out. Paired with the colors they chose it really reminds me how deep rich colors can work so well with jerseys and team colors!
Maya Smith: 5. 10/10 no notes.
J Gray: 4. This cream road jersey may be my favorite in the league. The navy outline gives such a dignified feel to the logo. I'm in a love/hate relationship with the light blue, but it wouldn't take much to make me love it. The LPHF (Ligue Professionnelle de Hockey Féminin) patch on the shoulder is a great touch.
LJ Bachenheimer: 4. I’m so glad Montréal kept the cream color for their away jerseys because it looks awesome with their logo (the best in the league, in my opinion) and color scheme. I’m just not a fan of that light blue outline on the numbers, I think that color is executed more effectively on the home jersey. As a whole though, it’s a gorgeous jersey set- my true score is 4.5 rather than 4.
Final Score: 4.5 / 5
General Thoughts
Mike Murphy: All things considered, the PWHL did very well here. The fan response seems to be positive and really, that is what matters most. People seem excited to see something different and fresh and that is what these jerseys are.
Elisha Côté: Overall, I'm really happy with these jerseys and I can't wait to see them in action!
Giselle Velazquez: I do love that it feels like the PWHL tries to have its own identity separate from other leagues from the past or present. You can tell they put effort and thought into everything with each team and I respect and appreciate that so much. You can't go wrong with any of these jerseys in your closet. Bravo! 👏
Maya Smith: I don't HATE any of them, but I really only LOVE Montréal and Toronto.
LJ Bachenheimer: As a whole, I’m content with these jerseys. I like the elements of classic hockey aesthetic mixed with bright colors for a modern look. I also adore that each team got a custom number font with a unique pattern, it’s a cool look and a great way to contribute to the teams' visual identities. However, there are two odd design choices across the set that I can only assume are a symptom of the Bauer jersey template. Why does every jersey have a shoulder yoke and why don’t the sleeve stripes go all the way around the arm? Otherwise, I'm choosing to appreciate them at face value.
