SB Nation’s Women’s College Hockey Division I Poll: Initial Intrigue
All of the teams that are playing already got some action and only two lost, when two top ten teams collided.
All the non-Ivy league ranked teams were in action this week, and we were able to glisten some information but there is clearly a lot left to learn. The top ten is largely unanimous other than a single vote for Harvard, just the order is still up for debate at the moment.
1. Wisconsin (4-0-0), 130 (13) — Last poll: 1
• Last Week: W 7-0 v Penn State (10/4), W 3-0 v Penn State (10/5)
• Coming Week: @ Ohio State (10/11, 10/12)
A pair of shutouts while raising their banner and the Badgers stay atop the poll. A trip to Columbus will let them make a pair of statement wins or will be an indication that the WCHA is more wide open then many believe.
2. Minnesota (4-0-0), 114 — Last poll: 2
• Last week: W 6-0 @ Minnesota State (10/4), W 7-1 @ Minnesota State (10/5)
• Coming Week: @ Robert Morris (10/11, 10/12)
Two big wins against the bottom of the conference leave the Gophers where they were to start the week just with WCHA points. Now they travel to Pittsburgh for a pair.
3. Northeastern (1-0-0), 94 — Last poll: 4
• Last week: W 5-0 @ Union (10/4)
• Coming Week: @ Syracuse (10/11, 10/12)
The Huskies offense returned to their potent ways right off the bat, scoring five goals in the first period. They will head back to upstate New York for a pair against the Orange who have given scares to two other top-10 teams.
4. Clarkson (3-1-0), 89 — Last poll: 3
• Last week: W 4-2 @ Minnesota-Duluth (10/4), L 0-2 @ Minnesota-Duluth (10/5)
• Coming Week: No Games
Clarkson had another rough weekend, this time they dropped a game on the road. A weekend off should allow the Golden Knights to recover from their injuries.
5. Cornell (0-0-0), 71 — Last poll: 5
• Last week: No Games
• Coming Week: No Games
The Ivy League starts their exhibition season soon but no games yet.
6. Princeton (0-0-0), 65 — Last poll: 6
• Last week: No Games
• Coming Week: No Games
The Tigers are still sitting idle.
7. Boston College (4-0-0), 42 — Last poll: 9
• Last week: W 6-0 @ Holy Cross (10/3), W 4-3 @ Syracuse (10/5)
• Coming Week: No Games
The Eagles took Holy Cross to the cleaners to stay undefeated in conference play. Next they went to Syracuse where they got up to a 4-1 lead which almost slipped out of their hands. They were able to keep their grip on it for a 4-3 win before taking the coming weekend off.
T-8. Minnesota-Duluth (1-1-0), 39 — Last poll: 10
• Last week: L 2-4 v Clarkson (10/4), W 2-0 v Clarkson (10/5)
• Coming Week: v Minnesota State (10/11, 10/12)
A split at home against eastern power Clarkson has earned the Bulldog’s the title “Belles of the Ball’ this week. Now they play host to lowly Mankato.
T-8. Ohio State (4-0-0), 39 — Last poll: 8
• Last week: W 5-2 @ St. Cloud State (10/4), W 6-2 @ St. Cloud State (10/5)
• Coming Week: v Wisconsin (10/11, 10/12)
A couple of easy wins against inferior opponents and the Buckeyes stayed put in the poll. They now get the defending champs on home ice to see if they are for real or not.
10. Boston University (1-0-0), 31 — Last poll: 7
• Last week: W 2-1 @ Union (10/6)
• Coming Week: v Merrimack (10/11), @ New Hampshire (10/12)
The Terriers got a scare from a bad Union team and slipped in the polls accordingly. They will now open up Hockey East play.
