Staturday: Janine Weber is crushing it

Hat tricks for everyone. The Riveters were the first NWHL franchise to record two hat tricks in one game last Sunday when Madison Packer and Tatiana Rafter both buried three goals. And two days earlier Haley Skarupa picked up her second hat trick of the season in a game against Meghan Duggan, who also had a hat trick, and the Boston Pride.

The most significant victory of last weekend was Brampton managing to split the weekend series with Montreal. They bested Les Canadiennes 4-2 on Sunday after falling to them 5-1 on Saturday night.

CWHL

  • Two goaltenders in the CWHL have recorded assists this year (and messed with my stat tracking project): Christina Kessler of the Furies and Delayne Brian of the Inferno. Both assists came at even strength and, as you might expect, were secondary.
  • Brampton’s Laura Stacey has taken over the rookie scoring lead. She has 8 goals and 11 assists in 18 games this season for the Thunder. What’s even more impressive is the fact that all of her goals have come at even strength.
  • Speaking of Brampton, Marie-Philip Poulin was kept out of the box score for the third time last weekend against the Thunder. That brought an end to Pou’s eight-game point streak. She had 16 points during that stretch.
  • Boston’s Lauren Dahm has made a staggering 688 saves this season (her closest competitor is Kessler who has made 374 saves). Dahm’s individual SA60 this season for the Blades is 45.30 (for some context, Tuukka Rask has an individual SA60 of 25.91). She and Emerance Maschmeyer are the only two goalies in the CWHL to stop every shot they have faced in the shootout this year./
  • Julie Allen and Marie-Philip Poulin have both recorded four points in the season series between Les Canadiennes and the Furies. The last time the two teams met, on November 20th, the Furies shocked Montreal in a 5-2 victory./

NWHL

  • Gigi Marvin returned to action for the Pride and chipped in with a goal. Her 4 goals on the year is second only to Buffalo’s Megan Bozek in goals among NWHL defenders.
  • It’s safe to say that the Riveters are happy to have Amanda Kessel back. Since her return from her lower-body injury Kessel has 2 goals and 5 assists and three games with New York. She has recorded a point in every NWHL game she has played.
  • Janine Weber is now leading the Riveters in points with the 14 (6 goals, 8 assists) she has piled up in 13 games this year. Last season Weber had 3 goals in 6 assists in 18 games. /
  • The Connecticut Whale have three different forwards with 6 even strength goals this season. The Whale may not be second in the standings, but their offense is second only to Boston’s.
  • Buffalo’s Shiann Darkangelo is the only NWHL forward to put at least 40 shots on net and have a shooting percentage below 10 percent. The Beauts’ center is second in the league in shots with the 58 she has put on net. Darkangelo has 4 goals this year playing for her second NWHL team./

NCAA Division I

  • Connecticut’s Leah Lum is tied for second in the nation in power play goals (6). She had 3 last year as a sophomore playing for the Huskies.
  • Lee Stecklein of Minnesota is third in the nation among defenders in assists. But only 3 of her 16 assists have been primary. She is tied for the NCAA lead in secondary assists with three other skaters.
  • Buckeye goaltender Cassidy Sauve has started in all 28 of Ohio States games this year. She leads the nation in shots faced and total saves and is just 206 saves shy of last season’s save leader Melissa Black (Union).
  • Lara Stalder of Minnesota Duluth and Brooke Webster of St. Lawrence share the senior point lead. Both forwards have 44 points in 28 games and they’ve both taken just four minor penalties this season./
  • Stalder also leads the nation in 5v5 goals (17) and points (36) in 27 games. The Swiss national player and Bulldog star had 41 points (all situations) in 34 games last year./
