The numbers of the 2018 NWHL Draft

Who is from where and how many are there

The NWHL wrapped up its 2018 Draft today. In five rounds spread across two day, 25 players were drafted by the league’s five teams. As you might have expected, there are a lot of storylines to follow this year.

Annie Pankowski was the first overall pick on day one. Courtney Wittig kicked off day two as the first Division III player to be drafted in four years of the NWHL Draft. Pankowksi and Wittig will definitely be two players who are discussed a lot in the coming weeks, but let’s look at some of the other trends from this year’s draft class.

Pedal to the Medals

Four Pyeongchang Olympians were drafted — three in the first round, one in the third. Canadian Emily Clark, who won silver with Team Canada in Pyeongchang, was the latest Olympian selected in the draft.

Local Roots

Five players were drafted by teams that are located in the state they both grew up in and went to college in. Another five were drafted by the teams located in the state where they grew up.
