On September 19th, the win2day Austrian Women's Hockey League announced its formation.

"The founding of the win2day Austrian Women's Hockey League was the next milestone in the professionalization of women's ice hockey in Austria," said Yasmin Stepina, Vice-President of the sport's Austrian governing body in the league's press release. "We can now offer our clubs the platform to become more visible in the media, support them where they need support and thus gradually bring them closer to the professionalism they need."

The league's name sponsor, sports betting outlet win2day, also sponsors the country's pro men's league under their branding. According to the press release, the two leagues will partner together under the mission of growing the women's game in Austria.

The five teams playing in the league's inaugural season aren't new: all of them previously played in the EWHL. Fans of the EWHL can rejoice, though, as the deal to form the AWHL also includes "professionalization of the existing European Women's Hockey League" and the Austrian teams will continue participation.

While the AWHL's schedule hasn't been announced yet, the EWHL is already underway, with the AWHL's EVB Eagles South Tyrol leading the standings with eight points.
