#TIGWorldsFantasy 2021: Final Standings

Before we begin, The Ice Garden would like to thank everyone who participated in our fantasy hockey tournament for the 2021 IIHF Women’s World Championship. We had been looking forward to this event since hosting our NWHL Fantasy tournament and were thrilled to add one more layer of fun and entertainment to what is shaping up to be an unforgettable tournament in Calgary.

Final Standings

Here are the final standings for all 34 registered teams. And yes, Michelle Jay, the managing editor of The Ice Garden finished and third and didn’t even bother to name her team. Honestly, what a monster.

Winning Team: The Full 60

MVP: Peslarová

This team really had it all but was definitely led by its elite goaltending. In fact, its goaltending and forward depth were so good that this squad still finished in first despite Poulin missing two games with injury without being replaced. What a flex.

Peslarová was the most valuable player of the tournament thanks to her 4-0-0 record, .948 Sv%, and 0.75 GAA in the group stage. She and Japan’s Nana Fujimoto were the only goalies to start in all four games of the group stage for their respective teams and they finished first and second, respectively, in fantasy value. Harß. who was also on The Full 60’s team, finished third in overall fantasy value thanks to her own impressive stat line.

The Full 60 wasn’t the only team that had great goaltending. What really set them apart was a lot of bright young stars who delivered a lot of bang for your fantasy buck, including Fillier, Holopainen, Zumwinkle, and Shelton. They also spread the wealth in their roster construction, selecting nine players with values between 80-85, no player under a value of 70, and only really broke the piggy bank to add Marie Philip-Poulin, who cost a whopping 120 TIG Bucks.

Here are the top players from the group stage of the 2021 Worlds in terms of fantasy value, which I built off of a Game Score formula adapted from NWHL game score using data from recent Worlds and Olympic tournaments. There are many ways to do fantasy hockey, this is just how I choose to do it — which is a sneaky way of testing game score and

It shouldn’t take very long for you to notice a trend: the workhorse goalies on teams that won games were the most valuable players in the tournament.
