Six begin offseason by re-signing Darkangelo

The Toronto Six have begun their 2021 offseason by re-signing captain and first-line center Shiann Darkangelo.

The 2021-22 season will be Darkangelo’s fourth in the NWHL. She’s a two-time NWHL All-Star, an Isobel Cup champion, a World Championship gold medalist with Team USA (2016), and a U18 World Championship gold medalist (2011). The Six are Darkangelo’s third NWHL team and fifth pro team. She played for Kunlun Red Star and the Toronto Furies in the CWHL before joining the PWHPA in 2019-20 and returning to the NWHL with the Six on Apr. 22, 2020.

In addition to picking up three assists and 21 penalty minutes in six games in Lake Placid, Darkangelo was 60.83% on faceoffs. Her impact on a shorthanded Toronto team helped re-establish her as one of the top power forwards and best centers in the league. Darkangelo has 28 points in 35 career games heading into the 2021-22 season.

In their inaugural season, the Six were defined by a deep, dangerous forward group. Re-signing Darkangelo is a big first step towards retaining that identity and preserving the team’s greatest strength. The question now is which piece falls into place next for a Toronto team that finished first in the standings in Lake Placid before being eliminated in the playoffs by the eventual Isobel Cup champions.
