Toronto NWHL officially announces its name

Nearly a month after being introduced, the new NWHL team officially has a name: the Toronto Six.

They introduced the name and logo in a video featuring players. They said the name in unison before explaining that the name is “rooted in Toronto history but you can bet we’ll be making a legacy all our own.”

The crest is a combination of a T, O, and 6 in red with an angled golden maple leaf.

“The gold reflects the Golden Horseshoe region in Ontario, and also the high standards set by everyone in Canadian Women’s Hockey, and the levels of excellence the new NWHL team is committed to establishing – as a perennial Isobel Cup contender, as a provider of opportunity for women in sports, and as a leader in the advancement of women’s professional hockey in North America... The red pays homage to Canada and the flag. An additional pattern with the maple leaf is in tribute to the architecture of the city,” the release explains about the branding.

The exact uniforms will be released in the coming weeks, according to the league.

“We wanted a bold, clean and modern brand for the team, for the game and for the city,” said Tyler Tumminia, chairman of the Toronto Six, in the league’s release.

When the new team was announced, the NWHL asked fans to submit ideas for names. On May 11, they said that more than 2,500 fans submitted more than 300 potential names, but one name was a “clear favorite.” According to the league’s release, the Six was the most voted for name.

M Style Marketing, which was involved in the rebranding of the Boston Pride in 2017 and numerous All Star jersey, designed the new branding.

The Six are already shaping up nicely with 13 players signed for the 2020-21 season. They recently announced Mandy Cronin as their general manager, joining team president Digit Murphy in the front office. Their head coach and home rink have yet to be announced.
