Toronto will host 2023 PHF All-Star Weekend

The 2023 PHF All-Star Weekend will be held in Toronto on January 29 and will feature three teams — one with Canadian stars, one with American stars, and one with international stars from around the globe. There will be a mini round-robin and championship game that will showcase many of the league’s brightest stars.

All the action kicks off Sunday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre and will be broadcast live on ESPN2 and on TSN in Canada.

“This season we have the opportunity to showcase the record-breaking depth of our player pool that includes more Canadian and international players than ever before,” PHF Commissioner Reagan Carey stated in the league’s release. “Featuring the best of the PHF across three teams with national pride on the line helps demonstrate where we are headed as a league and our vision to be part of the global game in a major way. Bringing our new PHF era and foundation to a place like Toronto, a city steeped in hockey tradition, and a venue like the Mattamy Athletic Centre, formerly known as Maple Leaf Gardens, is a great opportunity for the league and our athletes and a perfect fit for our first Canadian All-Star event.”

Team captains and full rosters will be rolled out over the coming weeks, along with further competition details. The PWHPA just held an exciting All-Star weekend of its own in Ottawa which featured a Skill Competition and 3-on-3 action that provided several memorable moments and that is what these events are all about — celebrating the game. The PHF will be looking to provide a similar experience in Toronto.

“For the players in the PHF, playing this game in one of the largest, most energetic hockey markets in the world will be an incredible showcase for the talent within the league, and your presence in our community will help inspire many young hockey players and fans,” said Toronto Six President Sami Jo Small. “We have some of the best women’s hockey fans in the world here in Toronto and they are going to be thrilled and amazed by the incredible skill of the PHF players.”

The concept of having a roster that celebrates and recognizes global PHF stars makes a ton of sense, especially for this season. There was a huge influx of international talent into the PHF this season and we could see even more in 2023-24 now that the salary cap has doubled to $1.5 million. This is just one more way the PHF can make sure it puts itself on the radar of stars who are currently playing in the SDHL, Naisten Liiga, SWHL, and in Russia.
