U18 Update: Canadian standout Maltais commits to Ohio State

At just 17 years old, Emma Maltais has built up quite the resume. In three seasons with the Oakville Hornets of the Provincial Women’s Hockey League (PHWL), she accumulated a whopping 91 points (33G, 58A) in  63 games played. In her fourth and final season with the Hornets, she will wear the C.

In addition to her time in the PWHL, Maltais also has a lot of national team experience. At age 15, she was the youngest player in the U18 National Championship, a tournament where she scored the game winning goal for her team.

In 2016 she got play for Canada once again, this time in the U18 Women’s World Juniors Championship. There, she racked up six points (1G, 5A) in five games played.

Playing against familiar faces

When Maltais makes the shift to NCAA play in 2017, she will be playing against former national team teammates who now play in the WCHA. Lindsay Agnew, who currently plays with Minnesota as a freshman, and Amy Potomak, who will be joining the Gophers next year, are both stellar players, and having some insight into their game will definitely be beneficial for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Following in the footsteps of greatness

“Marie Philip-Poulin is my favorite player. I really look up to her and Natalie Spooner so I hope I can get a reputation like hers,” said then 15-year-old Maltais. Maltais will be playing for Spooner’s alma mater, and she’s already establishing a reputation for scoring, not unlike Poulin and Spooner did at her age.

She is well on her way to achieving that dream.
