The women’s hockey season is almost here (FINALLY) and we’re looking for more people to join our team here at The Ice Garden!
We’re looking for all kinds of different people to join us -- writers, editors, podcasters, photographers, graphic designers, etc. If you love women’s hockey or want to learn more about it, there’s probably a place for you at TIG.
If you’re even thinking of applying, shoot us an email, even if you’re not sure where you might fit in. We have a wide variety of roles open.
Here’s how to apply:
Send an email to sbnwhcky@gmail.com. Use the subject line "The Ice Garden Application."
Here’s how to apply:
Writers: Send us a sample or two of any sportswriting you’ve done in the past: bonus if it’s hockey, double bonus if it’s women’s hockey.
Never written sports before? No problem. Send us a writing sample of what you’d want your first story on the site to be. Some ideas: Who are the top three players to watch in the CWHL? What team will be a dark horse in the Olympics? Can the Beauts repeat as the Isobel Cup champions?
Please also tell us what team/league you are WILLING to cover. We are looking for writers who want to cover the NWHL, CWHL, Swedish league (SDHL), Russian league (RWHL), Australian league (AWIHL), and any other in between, but we are ESPECIALLY looking for college writers for NCAA or U Sports.
We are also always looking for stats people.
Editors: Let us know you’re interested and we’ll contact you from there!
Photographers: Send us some samples of your sports photography. Please also include where you live and how far you’d be willing to go to cover games.
Designers: Send us some examples of your design work. If you’ve never done graphic design, create a sample that you can send in for us, preferably some kind of infographic.
Other FAQs:
Wow, this sounds like so much fun but I’m really new to women’s hockey. Can I still join?
A lot of our staff are people who were new to women’s hockey and wanted to learn more about it. We have a great mix of people who have been covering women’s hockey for years and some who are brand new to it, but if you’re someone who’s eager to learn more about a team or a league, you shouldn’t let that stop you from applying. We can help with any questions you might have. #GrowtheGame
I don’t live in a city where a women’s hockey team plays. Can I still join?
Absolutely. If you’re applying to be a photographer, it’s probably best that you’re at least within driving distance of a team or rink for one of our main teams, but you can write, edit, and design remotely - going to games is not a requirement (though if you DO live near a team and want to go to games, we have several writers who do go to games on a regular basis).
How often do writers contribute?
We ask our writers to try and write once a week. You are welcome to do more than that, but we also understand sometimes life happens. As long as you communicate with us about your schedule, we can work something out.
Is there a question you have that isn’t answered here? Send us an email at sbnwhcky@gmail.com and we’ll answer it.
