Weekend Recap: Nov. 23 - 24
A wild Sunday for the Beauts caps off a split weekend
NWHL
Eight weeks into the season and the NWHL is quickly looking the Boston Pride and everyone else. While the four other teams struggle against the first place team, against each other they’re playing exciting, competitive games. This weekend was proof of that.
Saturday, Nov. 23
Boston Pride beat Connecticut Whale; 8-0
Pride: Mary Parker (Alyssa Wohlfeiler), Lexi Bender (McKenna Brand), Parker (Wohlfeiler, Emily Fluke), Jillian Dempsey (Carlee Toews, Jenna Rheault), Brand (Kaleigh Fratkin), Lexie Laing (Bender), Laing (Toews, Briana Mastel), Parker (Wohlfeiler, Lauren Kelly)
Whale: n/a
Lead by a hat trick from Mary Parker, 12 different Pride players notched a point as they continued their undefeated streak. Rookie goaltender Victoria Hanson got her first start, win, and shutout as she stopped all 19 shots she saw.
The Whale, who are still looking for their first win of the season, looked good in the first period. Despite seeing 20 shots, goaltender Sonjia Shelly only let in two goals. Their defense was steady in keeping the Pride to the outside with low quality shots. They couldn’t sustain that; however, as they fell apart as the game went on, giving up five of the eight goals in the third period.
Minnesota Whitecaps beat Buffalo Beauts; 5-3
Whitecaps: Lauren Barnes (Jonna Curtis, Amanda Boulier), Nicole Schammel (Haylea Schmid, Kalli Funk), Schammel (Stephanie Anderson), Meghan Lorence (Schmid, Schammel), Lorence (Curtis, Boulier)
Beauts: Megan Delay (Becki Bowering, Kim Brown), Taylor Accursi (Marie-Jo Pelletier, Lenka Curmova), Accursi
The Whitecaps tagged the Beauts for four goals in the first period. The Beauts seems to be making a comeback as they then rattled off three straight of their own, including a goal by Accursi in the first minute of the third period. But power play goal by Schammel sealed the deal.
Sunday, Nov. 24
Beauts beat Whitecaps; 4-3
Beauts: Taylor Accursi (Corinne Buie, Marie-Jo Pelletier), Erin Gehen (Iveta Klimasova, Brooke Stacey), Accursi (Klimasova, Ana Orzechowski), Accursi (Pelletier, Lenka Curmova)
Whitecaps: Allie Thunstrom (Jonna Curtis), Thunstrom (Lisa Martinson, Meaghan Pezon), Curtis (Thunstrom, Martinson)
Taylor Accursi, wow. The veteran Beaut did exactly what a veteran should do when her team is down 3-0 with 12 minutes left in the game and put the team on her back. Accursi went off scoring a hat trick as the game winning goal. The only other veteran Beaut, Corinne Buie was a crucial play maker in the goals as well - assisting the first on odd-player rush, drawing a penalty for Gehen’s goal, and winning offensive zone faceoffs.
Another note of the game were the 16 penalties called. Some were questionable calls and some of were out of frustration by the Beauts as through the first two periods they had eight called on them to the two called on the Whitecaps. But nonetheless, the Beauts only allowed two power play goals in that stretch, a huge feat.
